Mutt and Jeff es una tira c\u00f3mica estadounidense de larga trayectoria, creada por el caricaturista Bud Fisher en 1907 sobre dos \u00abfan\u00e1ticos de poca monta\u00bb. Se considera la primera tira c\u00f3mica diaria. El concepto de una tira con personajes recurrentes en m\u00faltiples vi\u00f1etas, con una frecuencia de seis d\u00edas a la semana, ya hab\u00eda sido pionero en la ef\u00edmera A. Piker Clerk de Clare Briggs, pero fue Mutt and Jeff, la primera tira c\u00f3mica diaria de \u00e9xito, la que marc\u00f3 el rumbo de la futura tendencia.<\/p>\n

Esta vez, Mutt y Jeff no son excesivamente pr\u00f3speros (una situaci\u00f3n financiera que no les es ajena) y, como de costumbre, se dedican a idear maneras de ganarse la vida f\u00e1cilmente, cuanto m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil, mejor. Los organistas itinerantes no tienen dificultad para conseguir dinero; y como Mutt siempre tuvo inclinaci\u00f3n musical, sin duda podr\u00eda producir la misma calidad y cantidad de m\u00fasica que los en\u00e9rgicos monta\u00f1eros italianos nos regalan. Pero \u00bfqu\u00e9 ser\u00eda de la m\u00fasica de \u00f3rgano sin un mono? \u00bfC\u00f3mo conseguir un mono? Esa es la cuesti\u00f3n. La mente de Mutt se pone en marcha. Necesita algo m\u00e1s que un poco de persuasi\u00f3n por su parte para conseguir que el peque\u00f1o Jeff se haga pasar por el tan necesario mono. El organista Mutt y el monje coleccionista Jeff pronto empiezan a hacer ruido y, de paso, a ganar dinero. Sin embargo, el negocio no cumple las expectativas m\u00e1s optimistas de Mutt y, por supuesto, se lo quita al mono. Los perreros, un grupo de tiernos corazones, liberan a Jeff de las brutales garras de Mutt y se lo llevan con una variopinta manada de perros callejeros. \u00bfQu\u00e9 hace Mutt sin su mono? \u00bfQu\u00e9 hace Jeff en la guarida de los perros? \u00bfQu\u00e9 hacen los perreros? Montan tantas travesuras escandalosas que mantienen a j\u00f3venes y mayores ri\u00e9ndose sin parar hasta el cl\u00edmax.<\/p>\n

A principios de julio de 1911, durante la era del cine mudo, en Nestor Comedies, propiedad de David Horsley, en Bayonne, Nueva Jersey, Al Christie comenz\u00f3 a producir un cortometraje c\u00f3mico semanal de una sola bobina con actores reales, basado en la tira c\u00f3mica.
