En el a\u00f1o 2000, durante la restauraci\u00f3n de la saga, el editor Michael Thau mostr\u00f3 su inter\u00e9s de revivir la versi\u00f3n original de Donner. Bryan Singer logr\u00f3 recuperar parte del metraje filmado con Marlon Brando en su papel de Jor-El para su pel\u00edcula Superman Returns con lo que se dio luz verde al proyecto. La versi\u00f3n por Thau bajo la supervisi\u00f3n del mismo Donner junto con el guionista y consultor creativo Tom Mankiewicz. A diferencia de otras versiones, la versi\u00f3n de Donner es una versi\u00f3n alterna a la teatral de Lester aproxim\u00e1ndose m\u00e1s al guion original (Donner hab\u00eda filmado el 75% de la pel\u00edcula simult\u00e1neamente a Superman), mostrando adem\u00e1s escenas nunca antes vistas, entrada y cr\u00e9ditos finales y montaje con Marlon Brando reemplazando a Susannah
